Explaining Taxonomy to a Bird documents Simon Faithfull's 2019 exhibition An Arbitrary Taxonomy of Birds at the Natural History Museum Berlin. Faithfull's alternative classifications mischievously disrupt the established Linnaean naming and ordering system which Faithfull suggests is an extension of mankind's "deranged and obsessive attempt to catalogue all life on Earth."

Lost is an inventory of missing things, which renowned artist Simon Faithfull has mislaid over a period of 39 years. A simple but extensive inventory, Lost is a book that catalogues these objects and the strange, sometimes poignant and sometimes humorous stories of their individual departures.

In June 2006, Lost was deliberately left around the town of Whitstable, on the south-east coast of England. The publication appeared each day on benches, in pubs, by the seashore and on the various forms of public transport that were leaving the area.

These original 500 copies of Lost were individually numbered and finders were encouraged to record their discovery on a website before releasing the book back into the world. To see the surprisingly global paths that this first release of books made, please visit www.simonfaithfull.org/lost

This book accompanied film maker Chantal Akermans’s installation at the Jewish Museum Berlin. ‘To walk next to one’s shoelaces in an empty fridge’ is a two room piece. In the first, text fragments are projected onto a gauze spiral. In the second, a two panelled short film is shown in which Akerman and her mother examine diary entries written by Akerman's maternal grandmother as a young girl who later perished in Auschwitz.

The mother-daughter conversation shifts from vivid memories of the camp, which Akerman's mother survived, to the present day, in which her mother joyfully states: 'I am so happy to have lived to see this day.'

With an introduction by Cilly Kugelmann and essays by Amy Taubin and Edna Moshenson, the book includes a transcript of the piece, as well as film stills and installation photographs, features japanese block bound pages and a specially produced gauze dust cover.
